Sichuan University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is a key university under the national "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Project" and is known as the first university in the west. It was formed by the merger of Sichuan University, Chengdu University of Technology and West China University of Medical Sciences in April 1994 and September 2000. The former Sichuan University was founded in 1896, formerly known as Sichuan Chinese and Western School.
