Southwest Petroleum University, referred to as "Southwest Normal University", is located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, China, and is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Sichuan and China Petroleum Group Co., Ltd., sinopec group and China Offshore Oil Group Co., Ltd.; It is the first batch of national double-class and world-class discipline construction projects in universities in the central and western regions. Selected into the national11plan, the national key discipline construction project of colleges and universities, the national postgraduate project of building high-level universities, and the national demonstration base for cultivating innovative talents.

1958, Sichuan Petroleum Institute was established in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, under the former Ministry of Petroleum Industry. 1970, renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute; In 2000, the colleges and universities affiliated to China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Company were transferred to ordinary colleges and universities established by the central and local governments and mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People's Government; In 2002, the main body of the school moved to Xindu District, Chengdu; In 2004, Sichuan University of Political Science and Law merged; In 2005, the school was renamed Southwest Petroleum University.
