Southwest University of Science and Technology, referred to as Southwest University of Science and Technology, is located in Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. It was jointly built by the Ministry of Education, the State Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Sichuan Provincial People's Government. It is one of the key universities in western China 14 and one of the designated universities for comprehensive innovation and reform experiments in Sichuan Province.

On August 23, 2000, under the background of deepening the reform of higher education system, developing the western region and building China (Mianyang) Science and Technology City, the Ministry of Education approved the merger of Southwest Institute of Technology and Mianyang Institute of Economics and Technology to form Southwest University of Science and Technology.
