As early as 1997, a large amateur orchestra headed by Professor Hou Defu, president of private Hualian College, was established. Up to now, * * * has formed eleven big orchestras, and keeps three orchestras at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels every year. Hualian University Symphony Orchestra has a strong voice and a top-notch level. It has been recognized by the World Orchestra and listed as the "Talent Training Base of Guangzhou Wind Music Society of Asia-Pacific Wind Music Association". Hualian University Symphony Orchestra won the first prize in city, province and national competitions for many times. In July, 2004, Hualian University Symphony Orchestra participated in the "First World Cup Wind Music Competition in Vienna in 2004" on behalf of China University Orchestra, and won the gold medal in the youth group championship and the first gold cup in the group total score, enjoying a good reputation in the whole country and even the world. In May, 2000, he won the second silver prize in the competition of "The First Excellent Wind Band Exhibition in China" organized by China Musicians Association. In August 2006, he won the first place in the Hong Kong and Macao International Wind Music Exhibition.
