South China University is located in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, and is jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Health and Wellness Commission, the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, China National Nuclear Corporation and the Hunan Provincial People's Government. It is a first-class university in Hunan Province, supported by the basic capacity building project of universities in central and western China, and the country is "1 165438".

Selected into excellent engineer education and training plan, excellent doctor education and training plan, national environmental protection training base, national college students' innovation and entrepreneurship training plan, national new engineering research and practice project, national international science and technology cooperation base, national innovative talent training demonstration base, national nuclear emergency publicity and training base, and national nuclear emergency medical rescue team.

South China University is a multi-disciplinary university (founded in 1958) which was merged in May 2000 by Central South Institute of Technology, which was originally affiliated to the Ministry of Nuclear Industry, and Hengyang Medical College, which was originally affiliated to Hunan Province. From June 5438 to October 2002 10, the Sixth Research Institute of Nuclear Industry, which was originally affiliated to the Ministry of Nuclear Industry, was merged into the University of South China. As of March 2022, the school has two campuses, Hongxiang and Yumu, with a total book resource of more than 3.45 million volumes, including more than 2.07 million paper books and more than 2,400 paper Chinese and foreign periodicals.

There are 25 directly affiliated colleges, 8 directly affiliated hospitals, 23 cooperative postgraduate training units and 72 undergraduate majors. There are 26 master's degree authorization points in the first-level discipline, master's degree authorization points 19 categories, 5 doctoral degree authorization points in the first-level discipline, and 3 post-doctoral research stations in the first-level discipline;

There are 36,277 full-time undergraduates, 65 doctoral and master students, and 465 international students. There are 40 15 teachers in the school, of which 2,706 are clinical teachers with senior titles and 1204 have doctoral degrees.
