The school was formed by the merger of Central South Institute of Technology and Hengyang Medical College, and the Sixth Institute of Nuclear Industry. It is a university supported by the basic capacity building project of universities in the central and western regions of the country, an outstanding engineer and excellent doctor education and training plan approved by the Ministry of Education, and a number of undergraduate enrollment institutions. The school is located in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, with two campuses, Hongxiang and Yumu.
The school has 15 national majors, national defense key majors and shortage majors, excellent planning majors and comprehensive reform pilot majors, 6 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, virtual simulation experimental teaching centers and practical education bases, 3 national top-quality courses and excellent open courses.
