Shanghai University, referred to as "Shangda" for short, is a comprehensive university under the "2 1 1 project" of Shanghai and the state. The Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government * * * established universities, and the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government * * * established universities, which are world-class disciplines and were selected as "the Demonstration Base for Studying in China by the Ministry of Education" and "the Education and Training Plan for Outstanding Engineers".

1927 was forcibly closed by the Kuomintang authorities.

1983, Shanghai Municipal People's Government reopened Shanghai University on the basis of Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China Normal University Instrument and Electronics Branch, Shanghai University of Science and Technology Branch, Shanghai Machinery Institute Light Industry Branch and Shanghai Fine Arts School.

1On May 27th, 994, Shanghai University for Science and Technology, Shanghai University and Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology merged to form a new Shanghai University.
