On June 8, 2009, the new library of Shantou University was completed. The total construction area of the new building is about 2 1 1,000 square meters. The overall design concept is taken from China's thread-bound book. The external visual modeling embodies the elegant structure of China's thread-bound book box, while the internal space reveals the spiritual concept of China traditional academy garden space. Therefore, the final overall design product presents a unique aesthetic feeling of "the modern deduction of China's ancient knowledge box". Some authoritative comments even pointed out that Shantou University Library is "the most beautiful university library in Asia".

In the 20th century, university libraries used to be a place where heroes were judged by the number of books collected, and students were also proud of being able to read precious hardcover books and rare materials. Obtaining information used to be a sacred thing, and the whole process must be completed through university libraries. However, in the past 20 years, the concept of library has been constantly changing, and the electronization of books has become the general trend, and the collection of ancient books has become more of a spiritual symbol. At present, there are more and more channels to obtain information on the Internet, and the function of the library, which originally needed a lot of space to collect books, has gradually weakened. Shantou University Library conforms to the trend of the times, improves and develops on the basis of traditional library forms, hoping to become a broad platform for learning, communication, information inquiry and acquisition, rather than just a simple collection space.

Of course, this does not mean that Shantou University Library will become the product of science park architecture in the digital age, and its inner spirit always has the style and connotation of traditional culture. In the architectural tradition of our country, water plays a very important role, such as the garden buildings in the south of the Yangtze River and the ancient towns in water towns, which combine water and architecture skillfully. Western books are standing, while eastern books are lying down. The library of Shantou University looks like an ancient rare book lying on the water. Gently open it, water can flow into the open space and become an interesting space full of water, air, light, plants and many other physical interweaving. Shantou is located in the south of China, and it is very hot in summer. Because of the pool water, the indoor temperature of the library can drop by one or two degrees. Similar practices include placing a large bamboo forest in the central part of the library and cleverly collecting a lot of sunlight. This fresh operation makes Shantou University Library full of the concept of environmental protection and energy saving.

The library is the most important community center in the university, and its internal facilities are also an indispensable part of college students' life. College students who are used to chatting online may regain the original fun of face-to-face communication in the library: discussing group assignments, writing papers, organizing community activities, and talking about a desert island ... all of which are fully considered when making preliminary design. They designed 27 discussion rooms in every corner of the library for 2- 12 people to study and discuss together, where students can interact in various forms.

People often stay for a long time in university libraries. In their daily life, a college student may choose to spend the whole day in the library: reviewing textbooks, borrowing books, surfing the Internet with a laptop, doing research projects and taking a nap ...
