The school was founded in 1896, formerly known as Nanyang Public College,191renamed Nanyang University Hall, 1929 renamed national chiao tung university, and 1949 renamed Jiaotong University;

1957 experienced westward separation and was divided into Shanghai part of Jiaotong University and Xi 'an part. 1959, the name of "Shanghai jiaotong university" was introduced by Shanghai part of jiaotong university; 1999, the former Shanghai Agricultural College merged; In 2005, it merged with the former Shanghai Second Medical University.
