The Department of Urban Planning of Tongji University, formerly known as the Department of Architecture of Tongji University, 1952, was first established in China under the auspices of Professor Jin Jingchang during the adjustment of colleges and departments in universities nationwide. At that time, it was named "Urban Planning and Management Specialty" and the Urban Planning Teaching and Research Section was established. 1986, the Department of Urban Planning was formally established.

For decades, Tongji University's urban planning and design major has been in a leading position in China with its strong faculty, perfect curriculum system and rich scientific research achievements. In 2000, it was awarded as a key discipline in Shanghai, and in 20001it was awarded as a national key discipline.

With China's reform and opening up, economic development and urban construction have shown an unprecedented good momentum, and rejuvenating the country through science and education has become an important part of the national development strategy. Tongji University's urban planning and design major has always followed the basic principle of "grasping the world trend and maintaining the characteristics of China", and has made a series of comprehensive progress and key breakthroughs in education, scientific research and social responsibility.

Principles of urban and rural planning implementation:

1, local governments at all levels, that is, according to the level of economic and social development, do what they can, respect the wishes of the masses, and organize and implement urban and rural planning in a planned and step-by-step manner.

2. In the process of urban construction, give priority to the development of infrastructure and public facilities, properly handle the relationship between old and new areas, and take into account the needs of migrant workers' lives and the economic and social development of surrounding rural areas as well as the production and life of villagers.

3. The development and utilization of urban underground space should adapt to the unbalanced development of economy and technology, follow the principle of overall arrangement, comprehensive development and rational utilization, fully consider the needs of disaster prevention and mitigation, civil air defense and communication, conform to the planning, and fulfill the planning approval procedures.
