According to the online data of China Education, as of June 2023, there were 3,072 colleges and universities in China, including 2,820 ordinary colleges and universities, including 1.275 undergraduate colleges and 1.545 higher vocational colleges. There are 252 adult colleges and universities, excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

Colleges and universities in Henan, Jiangsu and Guangdong rank in the top three, with 168 colleges and universities in Jiangsu and Henan provinces, 162 colleges and universities in Guangdong province and 156 colleges and universities in Shandong province exceeding 150 colleges and universities. The least colleges and universities are Ningxia, Qinghai and Tibet, among which there are only 7 colleges and universities in Tibet.
