Formerly known as Shanxi Bank Cadre School, Commercial Cadre School, Supply and Marketing Cooperative Cadre School, Financial Cadre School and Grain Cadre School, five cadre schools merged to form Shanxi University of Finance and Economics 1958 in September. 1984 12 Shanxi Institute of Economics and Management was established. 1997 10 Shanxi University of Finance and Economics and Shanxi Institute of Economics and Management merged to form Shanxi University of Finance and Economics.

The school has more than 740 faculty members/kloc-0, including more than 220 full-time teachers/kloc-0, more than 520 professors and associate professors, more than 590 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 43 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, outstanding talents from the Ministry of Education in the new century, young scholars from Shanxi Province, academic and technical leaders from Shanxi Province and top-notch innovative talents from provincial youth.
In addition, the school has hired more than 30 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad as visiting or part-time professors, and more than 200 experts and scholars from off-campus research institutions and famous entrepreneurs as off-campus tutors for graduate students.
The school has a complete education system to train bachelor, master, doctor and postdoctoral students.
