Requirements for applying for a master's degree in MDes from Carnegie Mellon University
1. Degree requirements:
Hold a bachelor's degree from an authorized institution and have good academic performance.
2. Work experience:
At least one year (more than two years) professional or teaching experience. The School of Design defines full-time work (preferably continuous work for at least 12 months) after obtaining an undergraduate degree as one year of professional experience. We don't accept internship time as professional experience.
3. Standardization achievements:
GRE scores are not required, but you are welcome to submit them directly to Carnegie Mellon University.
4. English requirements:
If English is not your mother tongue, and you are not a citizen of the United States or an exempted country, you must submit a valid English proficiency score of one of the following administrators: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or Duolingo. The specific scores are as follows:
TOEFL has the lowest total score 102, and the lowest single item is 25. In addition to the TOEFL online test scores on the day of the single test, the School of Design also accepted the TOEFL online test scores of MyBest.
The minimum IELTS score is 7.5, and there is no score below 7;
The lowest total score of Duolingo is 128. Minimum requirements for individual performance: literacy: 125, conversation: 120, complexity: 135, production: 105.
5. Other requirements:
Portfolio: Upload your portfolio through the application. Whether you have a design background or not, you must submit a portfolio containing 5-9 works. We know and appreciate the different backgrounds and experiences of the applicants and welcome them to submit a series of works.
