Australian National University (ANU), founded in 1946, is located in Canberra, Australia. It is a world-famous public comprehensive research university, the first research university in Australia, the only institution founded by the Australian Federal Parliament, and the only institution of higher learning in Australia that enjoys the qualification of a national university. The school is also a member of the Pacific Rim University Alliance, the International Research University Alliance, the Eight Universities Alliance of Australia and the University Astronomical Research Association.
The Australian National University was established by a special act passed by the Australian Federal Parliament. The bill was proposed by Joseph Benedict Chifley, then Australian Prime Minister, and John Dedman, director of the Post-World War II Reconstruction Committee, and was fully supported by Robert Menzies, the leader of the opposition party. August 1, 0946 was successfully passed.
