The first president of Yunnan University of Finance and Economics is Wu Jian 'an, the second president of Yunnan University of Finance and Economics is Tang Jiaxiang and the third president of Yunnan University of Finance and Economics is Yao Dajin.

Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, referred to as Cai Yun University for short, is a key university in Yunnan Province, an overall construction university of high-level universities in Yunnan Province, a national key organization unit for social practice activities of college students, a national demonstration university for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, and a scholarship receiving institution for overseas students from China government. It has been selected into the first batch of teacher-student exchange programs in mainland universities of the Ministry of Education and the training base for international business officials of the Ministry of Commerce.

Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, formerly known as Yunnan Finance Cadre School, was founded in 195 1. 1979 Yunnan institute of finance and trade was established to recruit junior college students. 198 1 Yunnan University of Finance and Trade started full-time undergraduate education with the approval of the Ministry of Education. 1995 was identified as a provincial key university by the Yunnan provincial government.

As of April 2023, the school has two campuses, Longquan Campus and Anning Campus, covering an area of 2 133 mu, with more than 2 million books, 0.9 million kinds of e-books, 7 colleges 17, teaching departments 1 and research institutions1.

By April 2023, the school had carried out educational exchanges and cooperation with 160 universities and institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, France and Britain. Six Sino-foreign cooperative education projects were held, with the total number of projects ranking first in Yunnan universities. Bangkok Business School of Yunnan University of Finance and Economics was established in cooperation with Shi Lan University in Thailand.
