Fujian Medical University was formerly known as Fujian Provincial Medical College founded by 1937. 1939 was renamed Fujian Provincial Medical College, 1949 was renamed Fujian Medical College, and 1969 merged with Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Medical Department of Huaqiao University to form Fujian Medical University. 1982 was renamed Fujian medical college, and1996 was renamed Fujian medical university in April.
In 2003, it was identified as a key construction university by the Fujian Provincial People's Government, and passed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education with good results in the same year.
