Nanchang Institute of Technology is a state-owned university. It is a characteristic water conservancy college jointly established by Jiangxi Provincial People's Government, China People's Government and Ministry of Water Resources, which focuses on engineering and has the coordinated development of arts, economics, science, agriculture, management and arts.

Formerly known as Jiangxi Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power, the College was founded in 1958. Since then, it has been upgraded to an undergraduate college and renamed Nanchang Institute of Technology in 2004 after passing through Jiangxi Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, Jiangxi Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power, and Nanchang Institute of Water Conservancy and Electric Power.
