College was jointly established by CAAC and aviation industry corporation of china on September 28th, 1993. Comrade Li Lanqing, Vice Premier of CPC The Politburo Standing Committee (PSC) and the State Council, wrote an inscription for the college, encouraging "efforts to develop civil aviation and cultivate outstanding talents".

In order to meet the needs of China's civil aviation development, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, China Southern Airlines University and Shanghai Airlines jointly established China Southern Airlines Flight Academy in 2002, with the training goal of "good thinking, hard work style, strict discipline, sophisticated technology, high quality and excellent quality" to train pilots with undergraduate degrees for airlines.

The college has four administrative departments: Civil Aviation Engineering Department, Air Traffic Department, Transportation Management Department and Flight Technology Department. Four research institutes: aviation safety and security technology research institute, air traffic management research institute, traffic information engineering research institute and civil aviation soft science research institute.

A key research base of CAAC: "Civil Aviation Maintenance Engineering Research Base" and an engineering center: "Aircraft Reliability and Maintainability Engineering Research Center"; Civil aviation engineering undergraduate professional practice center (with 5 professional laboratories); There is also a civil aviation on-the-job personnel training center.
