Southwest Jiaotong University was founded in 1896. It has been named Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Institute, Tangshan Jiaotong University and Tangshan Railway Institute. 1972, the school was renamed Southwest Jiaotong University.

1989 The general school moved to Chengdu (Emei became a branch school and later changed to a campus). In 2002, a new campus was built in Xipu, Chengdu, forming today's school-running pattern of "one school, two places and three campuses".

There are more than 2,500 full-time teachers, including more than 200 professors and associate professors 1.200, and more than 900 doctoral and master tutors. There are 5 academicians of China Academy of Sciences, 6 academicians of China Academy of Engineering,1"973" chief scientist,1/winner of National Outstanding Youth Fund, 8 national experts with outstanding contributions, and 6 national-level teaching masters.

Southwest Jiaotong University has good conditions for scientific experiments, with the only national key laboratory of traction power, national laboratory of rail transit, 24 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and innovative practice bases for traffic engineering graduate students.
