Peking University Law School was founded on June 26th, 1999, and its predecessor was Peking University Law Department. Peking University law discipline was founded in 1904, which is the oldest discipline in modern law education in China.

Since the reform and opening up, Peking University Law School has achieved rapid development, and has always been at the forefront of law schools in China in terms of personnel training, scientific research, discipline construction, and promoting the construction of national rule of law.

Peking University Law School has first-class teaching and research conditions. The teaching administration building (Kaiyuan Building), the scientific research building (Chenming Building), the quadrangle (national courtyard) and the Fazhu Square are all located in the northeast corner of Yanyuan, close to the scenic unnamed lake area, with convenient transportation and beautiful environment.

In recent years, Peking University Law School has made continuous progress in internationalization, established close ties with law schools of nearly 100 top universities around the world, and set up joint research institutions in many famous law schools in Europe and America.

In 20 13, in the world-famous QS higher education ranking, Peking University Law School ranked first in Chinese mainland Law School. From 20 15 to 20 17, Peking University Law School ranked in the top 20 of QS for three consecutive years, ranking first in Chinese mainland and top three in Asia.

Master of Laws (Illegal Studies) is one of the professional master's degrees of Master of Laws (JM). The Master of Laws (Illegal Studies) is earlier than the Master of Laws (Law) and was established in accordance with the Interim Measures for the Examination and Approval of Professional Degree Setting, which was deliberated and adopted at the 4th meeting of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, since 1996.
