The Historical Evolution of Physics Department of Jilin University
The Physics Department of Jilin University developed from the Physics Department of Northeast Renmin University, and has passed her 50th birthday. Looking back at the founding history of that year, it is admirable.

1949 People's Republic of China (PRC), built on the ruins, is short of financial resources and talents. The northeast is backed by the Soviet Union, which is the industrial base of the whole country. Many projects aided by the Soviet Union are built in the northeast. At that time, a prominent problem was the lack of economic construction talents, while there were few universities in Northeast China. 1952 the central government decided to establish a comprehensive university in the northeast that can be in line with international standards. Northeast People's University was established under this background.

* * * Northeast Renmin University, founded by the Production Party, has a fine revolutionary tradition. 1950 In June, the United States launched a war of aggression against the DPRK. In September, Northeast Renmin University was ordered to move from Shenyang to Changchun. It took only 12 days from the time when the Northeast People's Government issued the evacuation order to the time when the last batch of students arrived in Changchun. It is in this revolutionary spirit that 1952 made the Physics Department of Northeast Renmin University stand out. A group of outstanding physicists, such as Yu, Zhu Guangya, Wu Shishu, Gou Qingquan, Huo Bingquan, Zheng Jianxuan, Gao, Huang Zhenbang and Xie Junmin, voluntarily gave up their original superior living and working conditions and went to Changchun with high enthusiasm to devote themselves to the creation of the Physics Department of Northeast Renmin University. It's not only cold here, but also starting from scratch. At that time, the country was in urgent need of talents. Objectively, the physics department is not allowed to enroll students, so it can only "do what it says", enroll students immediately, and teach while building. In the first and second years, 48 students were transferred from other institutions, 150 students were in 1952, 150 students were in 1953, and 2 10 students were in 1954. There were 7 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 lecturers, 1 1 teaching assistants, and 2 party and government cadres, all of whom were teachers of the physics department at that time. In order to learn from the Soviet Union, 24 teachers first made a surprise study of Russian. While establishing laboratories and compiling handouts, they also undertake the teaching tasks of more than 500 students. The difficulty can be imagined. First-class physicists integrate into the traditional style of the Northeast People's Congress and work day and night. Professors and associate professors teach two courses at the same time, and also bring students' graduation thesis; The laboratory is being built while attending experimental classes. If the ordered instruments and equipment are not delivered, they will lead students to attend classes in Changchun Institute of Geology or borrow experimental instruments from Normal University. Due to lack of funds, some teachers use their salaries to buy laboratory tools and spare parts. This selfless spirit of struggle has a decisive role in the establishment and rapid rise of the physics department of Northeast People's Congress, which has stood in the forefront of the physics department of universities in China in just a few years.

At the beginning of the department, it was quite difficult to recruit students. First of all, there are few high school graduates in Northeast China ruled by Japanese Puppet. Second, at that time, most students applied for engineering, and few people were willing to study physics. The physics department enrolls students across majors, so it is not safe to study physics. Some students said: "If you don't complain in heaven and earth, you will complain that you didn't report to a public college." "If you are not afraid of heaven, you are afraid to study in the Northeast People's Congress." At that time, there was only one full-time party and government cadre in the physics department to do ideological and political work for students. Facing more than 500 students, they have carried out in-depth and meticulous ideological education with their teachers, so that students' professional thinking is stable and they can study physics with peace of mind. From the beginning, the physics department has formed a good atmosphere of "serious and responsible teaching, strict requirements from teachers and hard work from students". In the Northeast People's Congress, everyone knows that "students in the Department of Physics are the most diligent". At that time, every Saturday night, there was a movie in the school auditorium, but the classroom of the physics department was brightly lit. Someone has done statistics. On a Saturday night, only seven of the more than 500 students in the physics department went to the movies, and almost all the other students were studying in the classroom or dormitory.

Spring breeze turns into rain, and hard work bears fruit. Students in the physics department of Northeast People's Congress have all become talents. Of the 22 students who graduated from 1954, 2 became academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and of the students who graduated from 1956, 1 became academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
