Foreign language education in Harbin Institute of Technology can be traced back to the beginning of 1920. At that time, as a Sino-Russian technical school, all the teachers were Russian and all the courses were taught in Russian. In order to help students learn Russian specialized courses as soon as possible, the school specially set up preparatory classes to help China students take Russian classes, which started the early foreign language education in Harbin Institute of Technology. Since then, foreign language education has always been an important part of school personnel training. In the early 1950s, an independent Russian teaching unit was formally established, which marked the new development of foreign language education in Harbin Institute of Technology.
1952 formally established the Russian teaching and research section, which not only undertakes the Russian teaching work of the whole school, but also established the English teaching and research group to undertake the English teaching work of the whole school. From 1960s to 1970s, teaching and research groups in Japan, Germany and France were established one after another. 1982, the school approved the establishment of the Foreign Languages Department of Harbin Institute of Technology. 1986 obtained a master's degree in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics (Russian). 1988 The Foreign Languages Department was renamed as the Foreign Languages Department of Harbin Institute of Technology. 1996 obtained a master's degree in foreign linguistics and applied linguistics (English). The School of Foreign Languages of Harbin Institute of Technology now has English Department, Russian Department, Japanese Department, College English I Teaching Department, College English II Teaching Department, College English III Teaching Department, Postgraduate English Teaching Department, Training Center, Multimedia Teaching and Research Center, Foreign Language Autonomous Learning Center, College Office and other departments, as well as Language and Culture Institute (Intercultural Communication Research Center), Canadian Institute, Russian Language and Culture Research Center and English Education Research Center.
The college has three master's degree authorization points for foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, English language and literature, and Russian language and literature, and seven research directions, forming a good academic atmosphere and research conditions.
