Famous Buddhist monks in modern times include Jing 'an, Xia Yue, Jing Jin, CheungYueng and Taixu. Most of the Buddhist monks who appeared in modern times devoted themselves to various Buddhist cultural undertakings. Because of their contact in many aspects, the gradually quiet Buddhist circles in China showed some vitality, which promoted the development of Buddhism in modern China. Among these Buddhist monks, Jing 'an, Xia Yue, Jing Jin, CheungYueng, Taixu and others are well known. Shi Jingan (A.D.1851-1912) was born in Xiangtan, Hunan. He once burned two fingers of his left hand for Buddha in Asoka Temple in Ningbo, so he called himself "Eight Fingers Zen". 1902 became the abbot of Tiantong Temple in Ningbo. 19 12 years, representatives of famous temples in Jiangsu and Zhejiang gathered in Liu Yun Temple to discuss the inaugural meeting of the Chinese Buddhist Association, and Zen was elected as the president. Jing 'an had a famous poem all his life, and he used it to make friends with celebrities at home and abroad. He was honored as a "Poet Monk" and collected eight-finger Zen poems. Shi (A.D. 1857- 19 17) was born in Huanggang, Hubei. He presided over Nanjing Monk Normal School, founded Huayan University in Harbin Garden, Shanghai, and preached Huayan Theory. 19 17, Xia Yue founded a law school in Changshu, but she died in yuquan temple. Shi (A.D. 1858- 1933), a senior monk of Tiantai Sect, was given a common name of Zhu and an ancient name of Xu. He has given lectures in Zhejiang, Nanjing, Shanghai and other places, and presided over Nanjing Monk Normal School and Ningbo Guanzong Society. He devoted all his life to the study of Tiantai Sect, and was named the 43rd descendant of Tiantai Sect, so he became the symbol of Tiantai Sect in modern China. Diligence and Xia Yue were the first monks to run education in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. In the history of modern Buddhism, some famous monks such as Ren Shan, Changxing, Taixu and Song Chi all studied under them. CheungYueng (A.D. 1865- 192 1 year) was born in Changshu, Jiangsu. He has studied many languages such as English, Japanese and Sanskrit, and is good at poetry, books, paintings and epigraphy. 190 1 year (twenty-seventh year of Guangxu reign in Qing dynasty), organized the Chinese Education Association in Shanghai with Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Taiyan and Zou Rong, and served as the president.
