Shanghai Maritime University, located in Shanghai, is a multi-disciplinary applied research university with eight disciplines, including engineering, management, economics, law, literature, science, art and education, which is characterized by shipping, logistics and ocean. It is a university jointly established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport.

The institutions that have obtained the quality system certificate of seafarers' education and training in China and the quality assurance of ISO900 1 by the Norwegian Bureau of Classification were selected into the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, the scholarship receiving institution of the China government for overseas students in China and the Shanghai model institution for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.

There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 national practical teaching demonstration centers, and/kloc-0 national demonstration engineering graduate training base. It has a water training center and a 48,000-ton bulk cargo teaching and practice ship "Yu Ming".
