The trend that CET-4 and CET-6 are gradually alienated from "tools" to "stepping stones".

They said that decades ago, there was no shortage of college students with good foreign languages, and foreign language teaching was just one of many courses. But now, no matter what major students are, foreign language learning has become a top priority. Many students must have English textbooks and dictionaries no matter which class they enter. In a year, I spend half or more time on "studying foreign languages hard".

Some experts pointed out: Is it worthwhile to spend a lot of time on exam-oriented study?

What must be changed is that CET-4 and CET-6 have evolved into "life and death symbols" of "one-vote veto".

This statement is not alarmist. Although the Ministry of Education has never linked the scores of CET-4 and CET-6 to the degree, most universities in China have "independently" linked this as a school rule. Every year, more than half of the undergraduate graduates in Shanghai fail to get a university degree and fail to pass the threshold of CET-4. Many students have excellent professional achievements, but their foreign languages are not enough, so they can only sigh at the gate of graduate school.

Experts point out that the rigid index of "one-vote veto" distorts the essence of foreign language teaching and puts the cart before the horse in professional teaching in colleges and universities.

As a tool, English is "over-inflated" in college students' courses and the real society.

CET-4 and CET-6 are held twice a year, with three or four million candidates in each round. But do we need so many talents who use English directly? For most candidates, since English is not a major, they should return to the standard of tools.

Of course, it is still difficult to cancel the unified English test, but it is not impossible to reform foreign language teaching and assessment methods. At the beginning of last year, Fudan University took the lead in decoupling degree awarding from the results of CET-4 and CET-6 in Shanghai. However, education experts believe that as a famous school in China, Fudan's move may further improve the requirements for foreign language learning to a certain extent.

Some experts pointed out that it is understandable to strengthen the level of foreign language teaching and improve students' foreign language ability, but the position of foreign language outshine others "must be shaken". In this sense, we can consider the suggestion of canceling the unified examination.
