This paper will introduce the "China Big Four" in the Republic of China and the C9 Alliance after liberation to help readers better understand the development of higher education in China.

"China's Big Four" in the Republic of China

The "China Big Four" in the Republic of China included Peking University, Tsinghua University, Central University and Zhejiang University.

C9 Alliance after Liberation

After liberation, there were no four universities in China, but there were C9 alliances, namely, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Xi Jiaotong University and Harbin Institute of Technology. These universities are nine Ivy League schools supported by the state.
