Liu Wendian, born in Zizhong, graduated from Waseda University. After returning to China, he served as the principal of the Sixth Provincial Middle School, the principal of the junior high school, the professor of mathematics in the provincial colleges of Chengdu Normal University and Sichuan University Engineering College, and the director of mathematics in Jinjiang Public School. Mr. Liu Wendian has made great achievements in his long-term teaching work, and he is a famous math teacher in Chengdu. Starting from 1923, Mr. Liu Wendian started Mr. Liu Wendian's private mathematics tutoring club in his residence (Jixiang Street 19), so that those who failed the primary and secondary school exams could be promoted to a higher level through counseling. By 1935, more than 3,000 young people have graduated from the remedial classes of the school, and many young students who have not been admitted to middle schools have finally realized their dream of further studies through the remedial classes. Therefore, Mr. Liu Wendian also enjoys a certain reputation in the society. 1935, Liu Wendian's private mathematics counseling society has a certain scale. According to the order of the government at that time, it was renamed as a private tutorial school for classical mathematics and reported to the government for the record. Tuition is paid by the tuition fees collected, and the shortfall is made up by Mr. Liu Wendian. The population of Chengdu is increasing, and there are more young people studying than before. At that time, the education situation in Chengdu was a serious shortage of schools. Every year, half of the students who enter middle school cannot be admitted, resulting in many young people being excluded from school and unable to receive a good education. Faced with this situation, in 1947, Mr. Liu Wendian and Liu Xingguo and Yan Xian, who are enthusiastic about education, jointly planned to set up Chengdu Wendian private junior high school at No.9 Jixiang Street in Chengdu and eight acres of Mr. Liu Wendian's private property. After the establishment of Wendian Junior High School, the board of directors of Wendian Middle School consists of fifteen people. In order to develop the school and solve the problem of shortage of funds, Article 9 of the Articles of Association clearly stipulates: "The board of directors is free of all expenses except travel expenses for business needs." Therefore, Mr. Liu Wendian was appointed as the headmaster purely out of his obligation. The salary is only the tuition fee for each period. During the period of 1947, Chengdu Wendian junior high school was established and reported to the government for approval. Mr. Liu Wendian was recommended by the board of directors as the principal of Wendian Junior High School. At that time, Mr Liu Wendian was 65 years old. After the establishment of Wendian Middle School, under the auspices of Mr. Liu Wendian, in terms of teaching methods, it was clearly put forward that "group teaching method should be adopted to abolish boring and stale teaching methods" and "self-study counseling method should be implemented to stimulate students' interest in automatic research, cultivate the spirit of independent self-study and enable students to acquire considerable academic ability", which undoubtedly advocated a scientific and advanced teaching method at that time. However, with the soaring prices, private middle schools like Wendian Middle School simply have no economic strength to improve the conditions for running schools. It can only go from bad to worse and become one of the worst schools in Chengdu at that time. Until 1949, when Chengdu was liberated, Wendian junior high school finally got rid of the predicament and got on the right track with the care and support of the party and the government. 1956, Wendian Private Junior High School developed into Gaowan Middle School and was renamed as No.18 Middle School in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Especially since the 1990s, with the strong support of the people's governments at the provincial, municipal and district levels, the faculty and staff of the whole school have worked hard with one heart and one mind, and with the joint efforts of everyone, No.18 Middle School has finally built a provincial key middle school with characteristics. Today, there are more than 300 faculty members and more than 3000 students here, and the scale of running a school is far from Mr. Liu Wendian's expectation. Looking back on the past, the faculty of No.18 Middle School went through hardships and devoted their youth and life to cultivating students. Looking at the present, facing the brilliant achievements made by the teachers and students of No.18 Middle School, people are deeply moved by the high reputation and high popularity both inside and outside the province. Today's 18th Middle School will, with the care and support of governments at all levels, carry forward the school-running spirit of the sages of past dynasties, aim at creating a national model school, and make joint efforts to create greater glories.
