Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1958. Its predecessor was Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its main campus is located in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, and its sub-campuses are located in Bincheng Dalian and Benxi, the drug capital. In 2006, the Ministry of Education approved its name change to Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which is the only institution of higher learning in Liaoning Province to train talents in the fields of traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and massage, clinical medicine of Chinese and Western medicine, advanced nursing and medicine.

The school is a research and construction unit of key technologies and platforms for clinical trials of new Chinese medicines, a national drug clinical trial institution and a national clinical research base of Chinese medicines. In 2006, the school obtained "excellent" results in the evaluation of undergraduate teaching level in colleges and universities of the Ministry of Education. It is a university that receives foreign students from the China Government Scholarship of the Ministry of Education, and it is a key discipline project with national characteristics.

The school has 6 disciplines, including medicine, science, engineering, management, literature and law, and 20 undergraduate majors. There are 17 colleges, 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 2 teaching departments, 2 teaching experiment centers, 3 research institutes, 2 libraries and 4 museums.
