The first season focuses on the Baltimore police's investigation of the Baxter Dell drug trafficking group. The investigation began with detective Jimmy McNulty. In the trial of DeAngela Barksdale, the key witness temporarily retracted his confession, which enabled DeAngela to get away with it successfully. After the trial, McNulty revealed to Judge Daniel Phelan that the witness might be forced to change his mind because he saw Iwan's deputy Stinger Bell and several other gang members at the trial site.
