The Department of Special Education is the first special education department in China. After more than 20 years of construction, the Department of Special Education has made outstanding achievements in discipline construction, personnel training, scientific research and social services, and is in a leading position among similar disciplines in China. The department of special education now has two undergraduate majors, including doctor's degree, master's degree and master's degree. The department pays attention to the cultivation of talents, especially the comprehensive quality and practical ability of special education students, and has sent a large number of outstanding talents to the country and become the backbone of the training of special education teachers in China.

2. Speech and Listening Science of East China Normal University

-Speech and Listening Science is now a relatively mature discipline abroad. In the United States, there are about 70,000 speech pathologists and 30,000 audiologists serving people with hearing, speech and language disorders. The development of speech and hearing science in Brazil, India, South Korea and other countries is close to that in the United States. Because these countries have advanced concepts and professional rehabilitation equipment, the rehabilitation rate is above 80%. However, at present, the quantity and quality of speech and listening professionals in China are far below the world average. There are about 8,000 employees, of whom only a few dozen have reached the undergraduate level through professional training. Compared with more than 20 million hearing-impaired patients, the "gap" is huge.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Huang Zhaoming, Chairman of Seattle Phonology, Speech and Listening Foundation, the Foundation invested 2.5 million yuan to set up a laboratory in East China Normal University in 2004. In the same year, East China Normal University introduced Dr. Huang Zhaoming as the leader of speech and hearing science to prepare for the establishment and development of the specialty. With the active advocacy and unremitting efforts of Dr. Huang Zhaoming and Professor Du, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, East China Normal University and the Department of Special Education of the College of Special Education set up the first undergraduate major of Speech and Listening Science, and applied for a master's degree in 2007. Speech and Listening Science is the first major in China's higher education, which fills the gap in this field.
