Based on the principle of "supporting key points, giving full play to advantages, developing characteristics and improving the level", Yangtze University has established three characteristic disciplines: petroleum science and technology, Jianghan Plain waterlogged land development and Chu culture. It is precisely because of the construction of these three disciplines that the school has not only made breakthrough progress in "reservoir description" and comprehensive development of waterlogged land in Jianghan Plain, but also made important contributions to the protection of wild plants in Jingzhou ancient city wall; It also promoted the construction and development of other disciplines in the school and achieved remarkable results. "Utilization of soil resources in agricultural water conservancy" is a provincial key discipline and a traditional discipline of the College of Agriculture of Yangtze University. In the process of discipline construction, the discipline personnel firmly grasped the scientific research topic of "Reconstruction and Comprehensive Development of Four Lakes and Waterlogged Land in Jianghan Plain", conducted in-depth research on the four lakes and waterlogged land, explored the theoretical and technical system of management, development and utilization of low-and medium-yield waterlogged land represented by the characteristics of the four lakes and waterlogged land, and worked out the results that are "of great value to the sustainable development of agriculture in the same type of region". In the course of this scientific research activity, the project undertaker not only fully applied the theory and related knowledge of the subject of "Utilization of Agricultural Water and Soil Resources", but also explored some new theories and technologies through research, which benefited more than 4 million hectares of waterlogging-prone medium and low-yield fields and generated economic benefits of more than 600 million yuan, enriching the connotation of this subject and providing a good example for the construction of other disciplines.

2.2 Promote the common development of related disciplines

The construction of characteristic disciplines needs the participation, infiltration and support of related disciplines and scientific research, and the relationship between them is inseparable. This not only supports the discipline of "agricultural water and soil resources utilization", but also enriches itself. This cooperation not only promotes the construction of agricultural water and soil resources utilization discipline, but also promotes the construction and development of related disciplines. Through the tempering of scientific research and the participation of related disciplines, the discipline group construction of this discipline and related disciplines has made great progress, laying a solid foundation for our school to go to the whole country and occupy the commanding heights of wetland agricultural resources and environmental protection and utilization.

2.3 Scientific research promotes the development of characteristic disciplines and better serves the local economy.

Knowledge economy and rejuvenating the country through science and education make higher education face unprecedented challenges and opportunities, and local universities are no exception. Local colleges and universities can better serve local economic construction by strengthening scientific research, promoting the construction of characteristic disciplines, producing more scientific research results and transforming the research results into productive forces, so that discipline construction can find its own foothold and gain broad development prospects. For example, the discipline of crop genetics and breeding in Agricultural College has always paid attention to the combination of scientific research and production, found topics and carried out scientific research in production practice, and quickly extended the research results to agricultural production, and achieved good results: the barley variety "Ebi 2" cultivated by this discipline passed the variety identification in Hubei Province and Sichuan Province in 1989 and 1992 respectively; Beer and feed barley "Ebi No.5" also passed the variety identification in Hubei Province on 1993.
