Primary and secondary schools in Chengdu Education Bureau should read Chinese classics at least 1 hour every week.

Recently, the Chengdu Education Bureau issued the "Implementation Outline of Classical Education Activities of Chinese Studies in Chengdu", requiring qualified schools to arrange full-time Chinese studies teachers and students to study (read) classics collectively for not less than 60 minutes every week, and to add Chinese classics to the Chinese examination. "Chengdu has been carrying out Chinese classics reading education activities in primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in the city for several years, and has a certain foundation for Chinese studies education." According to the relevant person in charge of the Municipal Education Bureau, for the first time, according to the characteristics of students in different classes, the syllabus has set up different classic learning contents of Chinese studies.

The outline requires that schools should incorporate the classic education of Chinese studies into curriculum planning, arrange teachers to undertake the task of teaching Chinese studies classics, and arrange full-time Chinese studies teachers if conditions permit. Classics of Chinese studies should be taught in class for at least one hour every week. The time for students to study (read) classic works collectively shall not be less than 60 minutes per week. All grades of unified examination (especially Chinese) should increase and infiltrate the content of classical learning of Chinese studies.

At present, the development of Chinese studies education in Chengdu schools is uneven. Zhong Bi, a Chinese teacher in Chengdu No.8 Middle School and a special-grade teacher in Sichuan Province, said that the school realized at least one class hour of Chinese studies every week more than three years ago, mainly through lectures. A Chinese teacher in the fifth grade of a suburban primary school said: "I should teach the fifth grade with the goal of learning the Analects of Confucius and reciting Mencius and the Doctrine of the Mean, but students only rarely touch the Analects now, and nothing else is involved."

The Municipal Education Bureau said that in the future, the classic education of Chinese studies will be included as an evaluation index in the assessment and appraisal of various schools. Chengdu Institute of Educational Sciences will also set up a teaching and research section of Chinese studies to study, guide and manage the classic education of Chinese studies in the city.
