Huazhong University of Science and Technology is called Huazhong University of Science and Technology in English, HUST in English and Huazhong University in Chinese.

Located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, it is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). Ranked among the national "double first-class", "985 Project", "21project", selected into "Strong Foundation Plan", "1plan", excellent engineer education and training plan, etc.

The school's predecessor was Huazhong Institute of Technology established in 1952, Shanghai Wende Medical College established in 1907 and Hubei Technical School established in 1898. After inheritance and development, Huazhong University of Science and Technology was merged from the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction College in 2000.

Huazhong University has drawn up a special name for itself according to English word formation-HUSTer, namely HUSTER.
