In coal geochemistry, he systematically studied the distribution, migration, enrichment and influencing factors of trace elements in coal earlier. Through systematic testing, statistics and analysis of coal in different geological ages, he divided the trace elements in coal into five types from the perspective of genesis, and established a mathematical model of the dynamic law of different trace elements invading water and atmosphere during leaching and combustion. The research on the distribution law of toxic and harmful elements in coal has also achieved certain results, which is of great significance to the rational development and utilization of coal resources and environmental protection. As early as the 1940s, Han Dexin investigated and studied the Devonian strata in eastern Yunnan. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he studied the petrology and genesis of Devonian horny residual coal in Luquan area of northern Yunnan, and named it "Luquan coal". He also made a comprehensive and systematic study on the evolution, coal-accumulating mode and coal-rock characteristics of Devonian in other areas, and proposed that there are three coal-accumulating environments in Devonian in China, and found characteristic symbolic compounds in Devonian. In addition, he also instructed graduate students and young teachers to apply the theory and method of coal petrology to the study of hydrocarbon generation from coal, and systematically studied the coal petrography, coal quality and geochemical characteristics of high gas outburst coal in eastern China, making coal petrology one of the important means to study and develop coalbed methane and solve the problem of mine safety production.
