Beijing Foreign Studies University, formerly known as Yan 'an Foreign Language School, was founded in 194 1, based on the Russian Brigade of Kangsan Branch. She was founded by China to meet the needs of the development of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. From the very beginning, she received the cordial care and specific guidance from the CPC Central Committee, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation. Its predecessor was the Youth Prevention Branch, which was established in 194 1. With a history of more than 60 years, it is the foreign language university with the longest running history, the largest scale and the most languages in China. While doing a good job in undergraduate education, Beijing Foreign Studies University has always attached great importance to postgraduate education. As early as the mid-1950s, Beijing Foreign Studies University began to recruit graduate students. By 1965, 65 graduate students had been recruited and trained. From 1978 to June 2007, Beijing Foreign Studies University awarded a total of 192 doctoral degrees and 2602 master's degrees.
