Xue Yong: How to educate the rich second generation?
Xue Yong (from America)

Domestic "rich second generation" training courses emerge one after another, from financial analysis, international trade, performance of listed companies, to golf, horse riding, tea ceremony, international ballroom dancing, Chinese studies, image dressing and taste. These dazzling "rich second generation" education just shows that China can't educate the "rich second generation".

After all, China's economy is still in the take-off stage, and the "rich first" generation didn't get rich for a long time, and just encountered the problem of "rich second generation" taking over. Look at the Rockefeller, Ford and other families in the United States, all of which have a history of 100 years. If we trace back to the British tradition, the education of the "rich second generation" in Britain and America has a history of hundreds of years.

Recently, I read a report in the Boston Globe about the education of GonzagaCollegeHighSchool, an elite high school for boys in Washington, D.C., and thought it was worth referring to. "People-oriented" is the motto of this high school. In order to train students to become "people who serve others", all graduating students must engage in at least 40 hours of social service. Although there is no rigid requirement for junior students, most of them actively participate in social services under the influence of the whole style of study. One of the main services is to provide catering services to the homeless face to face, and the school has set up a homeless rescue center on campus.

Most of these children come from wealthy families and have heard of poverty, but they have little personal experience. Serving in the homeless rescue center is their first poverty alleviation course. This kind of service, which sounds simple, is actually a great challenge for children aged 15 and 16. Many of these homeless people are addicted to drugs, and some are mentally abnormal, which is very difficult to deal with. Some students use lunch time to serve, while others simply stay in the relief center for a week to help prepare all kinds of meals. A 15-year-old boy is in charge of cooking, and all the people waiting in line for dinner stare at the ground without saying a word. What is human dignity, let the boy who just started to understand the world realize it at once. He immediately greeted him with a bright face: "Hi, how are you?" After a silence, I finally burst into a smile: "Not bad, not too bad."

This is the real "second generation" education! How do people get rich? Legal wealth is the reward for providing services to others. Therefore, the correct way to get rich is to know others first. Wealthy families are most afraid that their children will lose their understanding of what they can do for others, so they will spend money to let their pampered children see real life, understand what human dignity is and how to improve it. Research shows that those who have engaged in this kind of social service in middle schools generally have a strong sense of social responsibility when they grow up.
