1956 participated in the Beijing Chinese Painting Research Association with Qi Baishi as its president, and was a disciple of Master Li Kuchan. 1980- 1989 teaches in the art department of the Central University for Nationalities.
1987 went to Australia to hold a solo exhibition.
1989 went to the United States to attend the Memphis International Cultural Heritage Festival in Tennessee.
1996 drew a phone card for the American telephone company, so that Chinese painting could be integrated into the daily life of Americans. His masterpiece The Grand Ceremony of the Silk Road (200×800 cm) depicts the grand occasion of Yang Di's development of Hexi, governance of the western regions, personally visiting Wuwei and Zhangye, welcoming all peoples, singing and dancing by Hu merchants and envoys from various countries.
In late September, 2004, the column "Feelings in the West" of CCTV gave a special introduction to Chen's painting art.
On February 29th, 2004, Beijing Evening News 65438 gave a special introduction to Chen's artistic achievements.
He is currently a member of China Artists Association, vice president of China Painting and Calligraphy History Research Association, executive director of American International Chinese Artists Association, lifelong visiting professor of art department of Southwest Jiaotong University in China, consultant of Li Keran Foundation, and vice president of Beijing Forbidden City Painting and Calligraphy Art Association.
He is good at freehand brushwork of flowers and birds, landscape figures, especially the ink paintings of deer, which are well-known at home and abroad.
His works include Deer Painting Techniques, Deer Painting, Chen Painting Collection and New Works. His achievements have been listed in I Love China, Who's Who of Chinese Americans in North America (English version), Who's Who of Chinese Americans in California, Dreams Come True, A Round American Dream, etc.
The shrimps, horses, eagles, donkeys and camels painted by masters such as Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Li Kuchan, Huangzhou and Wu Zuoren are beyond the reach of future generations. Even if it is successfully copied, it cannot be confused. Once these lovely animals are mastered by their owners, they are endowed with special aesthetic significance. And because the technical proficiency can be said to have reached the peak, these animal images have also become the patent of the master.
Of course, there are more animals that have not become the "patents" of their owners, such as deer, which is light, docile and beautiful. Although it is often repeatedly expressed on Xuan paper by painters of past dynasties, no painter has ever become an authority on deer painting. 1994, The Deer Interesting Map was sold for $220,000 at the China Contemporary Art Auction in Hilton Pasadena, California, USA, which established the position of American painter Chen as the "First Deer Painter" in China.
As a visiting scholar of cultural exchange, he has held lecture tours and art exhibitions in many American states and cities. Various honorary citizens and cultural honorary certificates poured in. In just a few years, Chen's Deer jumped into the study of two UN Secretary-General, De and Annan. Besides, Chen's works have also been collected by British Queen Elizabeth II, former Japanese Prime Minister Noboru takeshita, US Senator Edward Kennedy and other dignitaries, as well as museums or art galleries in some western countries such as the United States and Australia.
Like any successful person, Chen's brilliance today comes from his efforts yesterday. He loved painting since he was a child, but his family was too poor to provide paper and ink, so he painted on the soil with branches at the door. After painting one, although I can't bear to part with it, I still have to smooth the pattern with my feet and draw it again.
1952 The work "Digging Pupa in Spring" was published by Beijing Daily. After Chen, a successful teenager, received the first payment from 4 yuan, his creative self-confidence increased greatly, thus strengthening his determination to devote himself to painting.
Two years later, I entered the high school student studio of Central Academy of Fine Arts. Zheng Zongyan, the first teacher, ended his self-taught free drawing and formally trained and taught, which accelerated Chen's progress. The teacher praised him: "The child is clever and diligent." Soon, Chen was apprenticed to Duan Luqing and two masters. It is said that at that time, I had to draw two pictures every day for four years.
Solid basic skills laid the ultimate road to success. 1956, at the first youth art exhibition held in Beijing, he selected seven works by himself! One of them won the third prize. Apart from getting 40 yuan RMB for the first time, the bigger gain is that she joined the Beijing Chinese Painting Research Association.
The president of the seminar is Qi Baishi, and the seminar has gathered many famous contemporary painters. As a junior, almost all of Chen's contacts here are teachers. At that time, the seminar was not like some deceitful people who only took money and didn't attend classes. Every painter has to give lectures in turn, and a new painter comes on stage every week, which really absorbs the strengths of many people. It was during this period that Chen was lucky enough to meet the master and eventually became his disciple.
Li Kuchan's artistic achievements are obvious to all. In the years of studying with the master, Chen realized the demeanor of the master. A generous and easy-going teacher tirelessly teaches this student. Students from poor families who don't know how to treat guests and give gifts not only don't give red envelopes to teachers, but also often get help from teachers with pens, paper and ink.
From 1956 to 1982, in the long 26 years, I have experienced too many ups and downs. Even in the dark days of politics, there were no teachers and students who cut off the affection between father and son. Masters teach and teach not only simple Chinese painting techniques, but also how to write an artist's character and life.
1972, Chen found a new way to paint deer. After long-term observation, accumulation and numerous exercises, it took 20 years. In 1994, the Interesting Map of Deer was finally sold at a high price of $220,000. Importantly, deer has since become Chen's "patented product".
In the early 1960s, Chen, who worked in the editing room of art textbooks, illustrated many famous books in the textbooks, such as Xiao Jieyu, Carving a Boat for a Sword, Meeting the Prime Minister and so on. It turned out that the hero behind the scenes was Chen, a young painter who was less than 30 years old at that time!
Chen has a solid foundation and draws quickly. In addition to painting, energetic Chen is also keen on Beijing Opera, literary poetry and other related arts. He not only read through all the literary works and poems, but also recited them. Up to now, he can recite many well-known poems by Shelley, Pushkin and Byron in cadence.
The profound cultural background greatly enriches the connotation of the works. Composition, conception and color all embody and permeate a painter's good cultural accomplishment. It is precisely because he has a strong understanding of foreign culture that he never refuses oil painting, although he is engaged in Chinese painting. He deeply agrees with the statement that "sketch is objective and color is perceptual", which is his bold attempt to gradually integrate the essence of western painting into Chinese painting for many years.
In 1980s, when he became a professor in the Fine Arts Department of Minzu University of China, he took courses such as freehand brushwork flowers and birds, art history and painting theory. He has written and published a variety of related books such as Deer Painting Techniques. 1987, he was invited to hold a solo exhibition in Sydney, Australia. This trip opened his door to the world, and he won a great victory in Australia, which immediately promoted cultural exchanges, visits and lectures in the United States two years later.
From the end of 1989, Chen set foot on the other side of the Atlantic, where he struggled for 10 years. As an American painter, he has a proud record. 1996, MCI Telephone Company hired Chen to draw a telephone card advertisement, and Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and Zhuge Liang in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of China's four famous literary works, entered the American people's field of vision.
Generally speaking, the Chinese paintings of painters living in the United States are mostly collected by China people, and the colorful world is simply represented in black and white. Westerners accept that they have cultural barriers. But Chen, who combined western painting with Chinese painting, can let a gallery owner package all 40 works!
There is an essential difference between integrating foreign technology naturally and copying it stiffly. Only by thoroughly understanding and mastering the essence and digesting it into their own useful nutrients can they become the ingredients they need. No matter in the east or on the west coast, the American customs in Chen's works are varied. These works, which mark street cafes, valley jungles, roadside streams and California beaches, are impressionist Chinese paintings with light, color and ink complementing each other.
However, Chen will never simply imitate impressionist painting perfectly. If you lose yourself and copy step by step, you are doomed to have no way out and no future. Drinking milk is not necessarily a cow. Chen believes that only by exploring the world artistic language with national characteristics can we enhance the highest consensus of mankind.
Perhaps he was born with a bold personality, or perhaps he lived abroad for many years, and Chen's consciousness and thoughts showed no signs of conservatism. He will not indulge in the monotonous pattern of "orchid, plum, bamboo and chrysanthemum". He believes in taking things, and there are not so many rules and regulations. As long as it is excellent, all mankind has the right to enjoy it. The artist's mission is to discover and convey beauty. Only by learning from others can we enrich our long and splendid China culture.
Chen's 300-inch-long and 70-inch-wide masterpiece "Silk Road Festival" appeared at the first "Four Seas Welcome to Spring" large-scale cultural festival in California, USA. This group painting shows the scene that Emperor Yang Di presided over a grand trade fair in 27 countries in 609 AD, which won applause and caused a sensation in California at least!
On April 23, 2002, at Christie's international auction of modern Chinese paintings, Chen's "Six Deer Map" was sold for $4,800. In the United States, many local newspapers, especially Chinese newspapers, often interview Chen and report relevant information. Among Chinese painters living in the United States, Chen has established his position. Chen, who shuttled between China and America, had a new descendant, a 30-year-old son. In addition to teaching, Chen Hao, a young lecturer at China Renmin University, almost turned a deaf ear to things outside the window and hid in his studio all day to paint. He also made great achievements and published his own collection of paintings. Although pen is still immature compared with father, it has unlimited potential, and shine on you is better than blue. Don't believe anything!
Chen and his son have their own studios and don't interfere with each other. Father is a deer, and the studio is full of galloping deer. Chen Hao Xishan, a famous mountain in Sichuan and a high wall, just came back with students sketching from Huangshan Mountain. The sketch on the long table is the peak in the cloud.
Chen, an American painter whose works are collected all over the world, still insists on writing, splashing ink every day and sketching a deer full of movement with a few strokes. These lovely creatures with beautiful shapes and full of vitality are on the paper, and of course they will not be achieved overnight. And there is no shortcut for any successful person. Therefore, Chen is very strict with Chen Hao. (Chen Zikai)
