The college consists of three departments (Surveying and Mapping Engineering Department, Navigation Engineering Department and Geophysics Department) and five research institutes (Surveying and Mapping Engineering College, Space Information Engineering College, Aerospace Surveying and Mapping College, Geophysical Geodesy College and Spatial Positioning and Navigation College). Three key laboratories at ministerial level (Key Laboratory of Geospatial Environment and Geodetic Survey of Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of Geophysical Geodetic Survey of National Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information Bureau, Key Laboratory of Precision Engineering and Industrial Survey of National Surveying and Mapping Geographic Information Bureau), Global Satellite Navigation Service System (IGS) Continuous Operation Tracking Station, Institute of Oceanography of Wuhan University, Wuhan University Disaster Monitoring and Prevention Research Center and other teaching and scientific research institutions. In recent years, the College has undertaken more than 100 scientific and technological projects such as National 973 Plan, 863 Plan, Science and Technology Support Plan, National Natural Science Foundation and key projects, and won more than 10 national scientific and technological progress award and more than/kloc-0 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress award.

For more than half a century, with the hard work and careful cultivation of Xia, Ye and other surveying and mapping experts and scholars of the older generation, with the concern of leaders at all levels and the strong support of industry units, the national surveying and mapping higher education and scientific research base with surveying and mapping as the core has been built, and more than 20,000 senior surveying and mapping talents have been trained for the surveying and mapping teaching, scientific research and production industry in China.

In the new century and new stage, the college is based on the basic theory and new thinking of surveying and mapping, satellite gravity field detection and its application, the unification of modern time-space datum and global vertical datum, navigation and location service, engineering survey and engineering safety monitoring, earth structure and geodynamics, space debris detection and early warning, networked remote sensing earth observation and remote sensing dynamic monitoring, ocean survey and ocean dynamic environment, mobile survey and intelligent survey robot, space-time geographic information engineering and smart city. The main research fields such as underground space information engineering are the key direction of discipline development, and a large number of surveying and mapping technologies and teaching achievements with international advanced level or domestic leading level have been achieved, which has made important contributions to the development of surveying and mapping education and surveying and mapping technology in China and the socialist modernization in China, and has developed into the largest comprehensive surveying and mapping college in the world.
