In recent years, the medical expenditure caused by diabetes and its complications has increased sharply, which has brought huge losses to the labor force in developing countries. It is estimated that in 2007, about 246 million people in the world suffered from diabetes, of which 46% were working people aged 40-59. If no measures are taken, it is estimated that by 2025, the number of diabetic patients in the world will increase to 380 million, of which 80% will be concentrated in low-and middle-income countries. At present, there are more than 20 million diabetic patients in China, and the trend is increasing year by year. In addition, there are nearly 20 million people with impaired glucose tolerance. Diabetes has become an important public health problem in China.

The United Nations passed a resolution at the end of 2006, and officially renamed World Diabetes Day as "United Nations Diabetes Day" from 2007, which promoted the expert and academic behavior to the behavior of governments in various countries, and urged governments and all sectors of society to strengthen the control of diabetes and reduce the harm of diabetes. In 2008, the publicity theme of the second United Nations Diabetes Day was "Diabetes and Children and Adolescents", just like the first one.
In order to raise the awareness of governments at all levels and all walks of life on the importance of diabetes prevention and control, and popularize the knowledge of diabetes prevention and control, China will carry out publicity activities during this year's "United Nations Diabetes Day", focusing on children and adolescents, taking into account middle-aged and elderly people with diabetes and high-risk groups.
