Nantong is located at the intersection of the eastern coastline of China and the Yangtze River, on the north wing of the Yangtze River estuary, facing Shanghai across the river. It is the only city in Jiangsu that has the deep-water coastline of the Yangtze River.

Nantong, located in the northeast of the Yangtze River Delta, is known as the "gateway to rivers and seas", which integrates "golden waterway" and "golden coast". It is adjacent to the Yangtze River in the south and connected to Suzhou and Shanghai through Sutong Bridge and Chongqi Bridge respectively. It borders the Yellow Sea in the east, Yancheng in the northwest and Taizhou in the west. Geographical coordinates are 3 1 4 1'~ 32 42' north latitude and1201'~12154' east longitude.
