Harvard is also the oldest institution of higher learning in America. It was established by the colonial legislature of Massachusetts in 1636. It was originally named New Citizen College in memory of Reverend john harvard, who gave generous support to the college in its early days. The school was renamed Harvard College 1639 in March. 1780, Harvard College was officially renamed Harvard University.
