Chang 'an University has three campuses, namely Beilin Campus, Weishui Campus and Yanta Campus. The address of Beilin Campus is the middle section of South Second Ring Road in beilin district, Xi; The address of Weishui Campus is the north section of Hong Chu Road, weiyang district, Xi City; The address of Yanta Campus is Yanta South Road 126, Yanta District, Xi City.

Chang 'an University is located in Xi City, Shaanxi Province, directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC). It is a national "double-class" construction university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government. It is a national "2 1 1 project" key construction university and a national "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform" construction university.

The school's predecessor was Northwest Traffic School of Northwest Military and Political Committee, which was founded in 195 1, Xi 'an Geological School of the Geological Department of the Central People's Government and Xi 'an Architectural Engineering School of the Architectural Engineering Department of the Central People's Government, which was founded in 1953. On April 18, 2000, Xi 'an Highway Jiaotong University, Xi 'an Engineering College and Northwest Institute of Architecture and Engineering merged to form Chang 'an University.

As of July 2023, the school has two campuses, Taibai Mountain, Liangshan and Weishui, with a campus area of 3,745 mu. There are 25 colleges (departments and centers) offering 86 undergraduate majors; There are 9 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 1 professional doctoral programs, 33 first-level discipline master programs, 19 master degree authorization categories, and 9 post-doctoral research stations.
