We open academic journals of distance education, and technical articles account for the vast majority, while theoretical research articles are few. This brings us a serious but often overlooked question: Does distance education have its own theory? Some experts who have been engaged in distance education research and teaching for a long time suggest setting up distance education psychology, distance education economics, distance education technology and distance education management. The tortuous course of China's distance education for 23 years lies in the lack of its own theory, which refers to the distance education theory suitable for China's national conditions. It is precisely because there is no theoretical guidance of its own that some major problems in online education today have been caused. The successful development of distance education in China should be guided by the theory of distance education suitable for its own development. Although foreign theories are good, they are not necessarily suitable for our national conditions. Only by combining with reality can we produce our own theory. The discipline construction of distance education led by Ding Xingfu has been started as a key project in the Tenth Five-Year Plan. This may be a good start of theoretical construction, and we all hope that distance education can have its own theory as soon as possible to guide the development of distance education in China.
(2) The development of distance education is still bound by traditional educational concepts.
At present, the teaching concept, thinking mode and management mode related to distance education have not jumped out of the shackles of traditional education. The students enrolled in distance education are different, and their education level, learning attitude, learning purpose, learning methods and course selection are very different. How to make a scientific teaching plan, syllabus, teaching content and examination standard for such a student group needs further discussion and solution. This is also an important reason why the quality of distance education in China is not satisfactory. Change the traditional teaching concept, establish the lifelong education concept, establish the student-centered teaching concept, actively develop various interactive means of online teaching, provide rich and effective interactive activities, and let learners interact freely with the media and teachers, thus creating a strong learning atmosphere of help, guidance, encouragement and friendship between teachers and students, and between learners and others; The establishment and management of institutions should conform to the characteristics of distance education; Pay attention to research and innovation; Cooperate in running schools, expand educational opportunities and improve curriculum quality.
