Before the land reform, Xiao Yong and Zhui Er in Zhaojiazhuang, a rural area in the north, were poor and loved each other. Xiao Yong's father took good care of the Zhui Er family. Zhui Er's father promised to marry his daughter to Xiao Yong as a reward. After the land reform, Xiao Yong went to primary school, and Zhui Er became a model of the school, and fell in love with Dakang, a model worker in the neighboring village. At this point, Xiao Yong's father had died, while Zhui Er's father was conservative and insisted on abiding by the previous agreement. Zhui Er's heart turned to Dakang, but considering that his family has already owed others, how can he be ungrateful? At the urging of Zhui Er's father and Xiao Yong's mother, nine-year-old Xiao Yong finally married Zhui Er in her twenties. After that, Xiao Yong couldn't stand the ridicule of his classmates, dropped out of school and went home, only playing outside all day. This film won the third prize of excellent film of the Ministry of Culture, 1949- 1955. This film is based on the novel A Twisted Melon Is Not Sweet.
