Shi Jing University Hall is the predecessor of Peking University. As one of the "New Deal" of the Reform Movement of 1898, the school was founded on1July 3, 898, and it was the first national university in modern China. At the beginning of its establishment, it was also the highest educational administrative organ of the country, and its establishment marked the beginning of modern national higher education in China.

Shi Jing University Hall was the highest institution of learning in China at that time, and it was also the first highest educational administrative organ in China. It exercised management functions and governed national education. According to the articles of association of Shi Jing University, its school-running policy is "middle school as the body and western learning as the application". After the "1898 coup", the Boxer Rebellion, Eight-Nation Alliance's occupation of Beijing and other changes, Shi Jing University Hall was repeatedly destroyed and closed.

1902, the Qing government rebuilt Shi Jing University Hall, offering two courses: crash course and preparation course. 1862 Shi Jing wentongtang, which was founded during the westernization movement, was also merged into the university hall. In the same year, Teachers College of imperial academy and Shi Jing University was established. 19 12 on may 4th, the official discipline of Shi Jing university was renamed as Peking University, and it was immediately dubbed "national". The National Peking University is the first university in China's history named after the "National".
