Hong Kong University of Education (HKEDU) is one of the eight public universities funded by the Hong Kong SAR Government. Its history can be traced back to 1853, the first regular in-service teacher training class, and 188 1 the first normal school founded by Sir Hennessy, the Governor of Hong Kong. 1994, the Hong Kong government merged five former normal colleges into the Hong Kong Institute of Education. 20 16 The Legislative Council of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passed the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance for the third reading. The relevant regulations were published in the Gazette on 27 May, 20 16, marking the official birth of the Hong Kong University of Education.
