Zahedan is home to azad Islamic University, Zahedan Medical University and Sistan-Baluchistan University (Persian:).

Most residents of Zahedan are Baluchi, who use Baluchi, and there are also a few Pashtuns, Sistans and Brahui in the city.

Zahedan is located in the eastern part of Cavell Desert and Root Desert. The city is ancient Sistan (Persia:? ) In some areas, the Sistan region is located in the border area between southeast Iran and southwest Afghanistan today, one part is composed of parts of Sistan-Baluchistan province in Iran, and the other part is composed of parts of Stamruz province in Afghanistan.

The name Sistan comes from Saskatchewan Castaing, which was once the westernmost part of Saskatchewan Castaing. A member of the Xixu people, who was once a native of Sistan, was deported to Punjab during the rest of the empire. Safar dynasty is one of the early feudal dynasties of Iran's Islam, and it was originally the ruler of Sistan. In the book Kings by the great poet Ferdowsi, Sistan was called Zabristan, and later it was called Zabolai (the name of a city in this area now). In Ferdowsi's works, Zabristan is described as the hometown of the mythical hero Emperor rostain (Persian:).

Zahedan is closely related to Sistan and Zoroastrianism. During the Sassanian dynasty, Lake Harmon (Persian: Daryāche Hāmūn) was one of the two holy places of Zoroastrianism. In Zoroastrianism legend, Harman Lake is the founder of Zoroaster, Zoroaside (Persia:? ,Avesta: Zara? u? Tra) In the place where the fire is reserved, before the end of the world, three girls will enter the lake, and everyone will become an angel to save mankind at the end of the world. In Sistan, the most famous archaeological site is Mount Hajj (Persian: Kuh-e Khāje) in Lake Harmon, which stands upright in the lake to form an island.

Zahedan is the main economic center of this region and the location of many small and medium-sized industrial enterprises. The city's main products include cotton textiles, woven goods and handmade carpets, pottery, processed food, livestock feed, leather, processed rice, bricks, reed mats and baskets.

Zahedan is the base camp of Sunni Muslims in Balochistan Province. Maki Mosque in Zahedan and Islamic school in the city play an important role in the social life of Baluchistan. There is also a Shiite Friday mosque in Zahedan (Arabic: masjid jum? A, English: Jame mosque), many community residents gathered here for worship on Friday. There is also a Sikh teacher's office in the city for Sikhs. The colorful Rasouli Bazaar (Razuri) can also be found in the city. Bazzarri is a mixture of Baluchistan businessmen and Pashtun businessmen. About 100 km south of Zahedan, there is an intermittently active volcano called Taftan volcano (Persian:? Taftan) stands on the surrounding plain at an altitude of 4042 meters.
