Question 6: What is the earliest dictionary of meaning interpretation? China's first dictionary that systematically analyzes glyphs and examines the meaning of words is Shuo Wen Jie Zi.

Shuowen Jiezi, or Shuowen for short. The author is Xu Shen, a Confucian scholar and philologist in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Shuo Wen Jie Zi was written in the 12th year of Han Yongyuan (100) to the first year of Andy Jianguang (12 1).

Xu Shen founded 540 radicals according to the glyphs, and classified 9353 words into 540 parts. 540 parts were combined into 14 according to the shape system. According to this 14 category, the dictionary text is divided into 14 articles, with a title at the end of the volume and 15 articles in the whole book. Shuo Wen Jie Zi *** 15 volume, including preface 1 volume. In Shuo Wen Jie Zi, Xu Shen systematically expounded the law of Chinese characters-Liu Shu.

All the laws of Chinese characters are embodied in the form of Xiao Zhuan, which is the last stage after Wen Jia painted the characters and turned them into inscriptions. It summarizes all the trends and laws of the development of Chinese characters and embodies all the spirit of the structure of Chinese characters. (Jiang Liangfu's Ancient Philology, 59 pages, Zhejiang People's Publishing House, 1984 edition) It is no exaggeration to say that it is precisely because of Shuowen that later generations can know the small seal script of Qin and Han Dynasties, and then identify the bronze inscriptions of Oracle Bone Inscriptions, Shang and Zhou Dynasties and the ancient prose of the Warring States Period.

The most basic method to interpret Oracle Bone Inscriptions in Shuowen is comparative method, that is, to interpret ancient Chinese characters by comparing the literate and illiterate glyphs. The interpretation of inscriptions on bronze in Song Dynasty began with comparative method. Because the bronze characters of the Zhou Dynasty are similar to those of Xiao Zhuan, the characters interpreted by the Song people are ordinary and not bad. This simplest comparison is the starting point of ancient philology. Until now, when we come across a newly discovered ancient Chinese character, the first step is to look up Shuowen, which is almost a certain procedure. (Introduction to Ancient Philology by Tang Lan, revised edition, pp. 165 to 166, Qilu Bookstore, 198 1 version).

Comparative method is gradually developed and perfected in the process of application. At first, this is just a general comparison between illiterate and literate glyphs. Later, I realized that we should analyze and compare glyphs from the perspective that characters can be decomposed into radicals. This radical comparison not only makes the glyphs more accurate and reasonable, but also plays a certain role in the interpretation of ancient Chinese characters. To analyze radicals, we should be familiar with the physical structure of Xiao Zhuan and Shuowen, because the main purpose of Shuowen is to explain the meaning of each word, on the one hand, to analyze the composition of each combined word, on the other hand, to indicate which radicals the combined word consists of, and what role the first radical plays in recording the sound and meaning of vocabulary.

In the study and interpretation of ancient Chinese characters, if there is a printed or repeated text of Shuowen to compare, then the explanation is conclusive and credible. If there are words that are not in Shuowen, even if we have known the radical structure of ancient Chinese characters, we can even determine its meaning, such as names, places or sacrifices, but the pronunciation is unknown, we can't say that we have fully understood these words.

If the seal script is not as good as Oracle Bone Inscriptions's bronze inscription, this is the disadvantage of Shuowen, then Oracle Bone Inscriptions's bronze inscription lacks a large number of influential literature languages as the basis, and Shuowen's explanation of the meaning comes from ancient classics, which is the advantage of Shuowen. Therefore, if we want to explain difficult words in ancient books or study ancient Chinese vocabulary, we should take Shuowen as the main basis.

The study of Shuowen is a basic research, which occupies a prominent position in philology, exegetics, phonology, lexicography and cultural history. It is particularly closely related to the meaning of words. We can't explain difficult words in ancient books without Shuowen, because Shuowen explains the original meaning of words, and the original meaning is the starting point of word meaning extension. When we know the original meaning of a word, we can further understand its extended meaning and borrowed meaning unrelated to the original meaning according to its characteristics. When we know which word is the original word, we can further determine the interchangeable words and master the changes in the usage of ancient and modern words.

The word Shuo Wen Jie Zi tells readers that this book consists of two parts: text and explanation. For the writing part, we need to know two questions: first, which words are collected in Shuowen, and second, how to arrange these words.

There are profound historical reasons why Xu Shen took Biography as the object of accepting words and annotations. Because Xiao Zhuan is a systematic arrangement ... >>
