1976, Feng Junqi was born in a village in Zhumadian, Henan. When he was very young, he often followed his father to read People's Daily and Henan Daily. Since then, Feng Junqi has gradually become interested in politics, especially politicians. His greatest hobby is reading biographies of leaders in bookstores.

When he was a graduate student, his major was world history, and the title of his master's thesis was "The Domestic Servant World of British nobles in the Middle Ages".

He entered Zhongxian County on the recommendation of his tutor Liu Xincheng, then president of Capital Normal University. Feng Junqi believes that "if we can go deep into the grass-roots political groups in China, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime fieldwork experience". Half a year later, with the help of Liu Xincheng and Peking University Organization Department, Feng Junqi successfully got the opportunity to work in a province, city and county for two years. According to the plan, in the first year, he was a deputy head of the township, and in the second year, he was an assistant to the county magistrate in the county government.

Zheng Yefu, his tutor from Peking University, also gave the greatest support. On March 7th, 2008, Feng Junqi boarded a train bound for a county with a box full of political science and sociology materials. "Don't have any fixed opinions, don't have any frames, keep your eyes open and observe more, find facts in practice and find the theme of the paper." Before he left, Zheng Yefu repeatedly explained.

Down to the village, for two weeks in a row, a dozen members of the village leadership took turns to make wine for the new deputy heads, and Feng Junqi vomited for half a month after drinking only one or two glasses. Someone gave him two boxes of "Quick-acting Jiuxin Pills" and "Danshen Dripping Pills", and explained that they were "essential drugs for officialdom".

When he first arrived in the county, Feng Junqi, who only received a monthly subsidy of 1000 yuan, was dressed simply. A colleague reminded him: "An official should wear a brand." Feng Junqi specially bought two T-shirts of "Seven Wolves" for this purpose, and gradually merged into the local officialdom in embarrassment. Most of the leading cadres in the village are also happy to chat with this "doctor from Beijing".

The following year, Feng Junqi was appointed as assistant to the county magistrate. During his two years on the job, Feng Junqi visited county and township cadres 16 1 person, including 26 veteran cadres who have been working in Zhongxian since 1978.

"In the 30 years of reform and opening up, what kind of group is the political elite at the grassroots level in China? What changes have this group experienced? What kind of political ecology and game rules are there inside them?" Feng Junqi wrote in the introduction of the paper, "As the largest cadre group in China, county and township cadres are directly related to the stability of the country and the promotion of reform."

After returning to Beijing, Feng Junqi took part in graduation defense, and his doctoral thesis was completed in Zhongxian County. "As a former cadre of Zhongxian County, I really should sing a hymn of Zhongxian County, but singing hymns is not academic research, and it is not helpful to reality and reform. I hope that the cadres in Zhongxian County can understand my research. " Feng Junqi said. On the printed title page, there is only one sentence: "Dedicated to Zhongxian cadres."
