Henry. Russell: Award-winning American astronomer
Henry norris Russell was the most influential astronomer in the 20th century. 18771was born on October 25th in Oster Bay, new york, USA. At the age of 20, he graduated from the astronomy department of Princeton University and received his doctorate at the age of 23. From 65438 to 0902, Russell went to Cambridge University in England to study abroad. After returning to China from 65438 to 0905, he successively served as a professor, director of the Observatory, consultant of the Air Force Aircraft Manufacturing Bureau and experimental engineer, enjoying a high reputation in the world.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Russell and Danish astronomer E. hertzsprung independently discovered giant star sequences and dwarf star sequences, respectively, and created charts showing the relationship between spectral types and luminosity of stars. Later, this kind of diagram was named Hertz Prugger-Russell Diagram after the surnames of the two inventors, or Herotto Diagram for short. After more than 80 years, the development of astronomy shows that the star map is an important tool to study the evolution of stars, which has won unanimous praise from scholars all over the world.

A binary star, especially an eclipse binary star, is formed by two stars orbiting and covering each other, which is Russell's research field all his life. According to statistics, binary stars account for almost half of the discovered stars. Looking at the binary stars from the telescope, we can see the wonders of the red and blue "sun" intertwined. Russell first established the theory of photometric orbit transfer of eclipsing binary stars, and explored the physical properties of stars with the help of binary stars. Star theory has become the basis of photometric orbit resolution of eclipsing binary stars, which has high practical value.

During his research career of more than 50 years, Russell published 265 papers covering many topics of astronomy and astrophysics. 1February 1957 18, he died in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. American astronomer Henry
